European motorcycle sales showed a 7.2 percent growth in the first half of the year in almost all two-wheeled sectors.
It’s good news for an industry that supports 156,000 employees. The two-wheeled sector continues to gain traction. Within the first 6 months of 2018 motorcycle sales across Europe increased by almost 42,000 — from 564,851 to 526,889.
Sales of mopeds smaller than 50cc decreased by 32.1 percent from 179,262 to 121,746, but electric motorbike registrants have spiked - 21100 new e-bikes (49% of growth), including electronic bicycles, which require no license or insurance.
Antonio Perdot, Secretary General of the European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (ACEM):
“The latest increase in sales, particularly in the motorcycle segment, is a very positive development. Newer and more environmentally friendly vehicles appear on the European roads. According to our estimates, it’s now close to 36 million units. At the same time, the motorcycle industry continues working intensively on the development of new vehicles that will comply with the upcoming Euro 5 environmental standard.”
The 17 ACEM member manufacturers of L-category vehicles (motorcycles, mopeds, three-wheelers, and ATVs)—BMW Motorrad, Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP), Ducati Motor holding, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, KYMCO, MV Agusta, Peugeot Scooters, PIAGGIO, Polaris Industries, Renault, Royal Enfield, Suzuki, Triumph Motorcycles, and Yamaha.
