In 1948, Harley-Davidson introduced a new Panhead engine as a replacement for the Knucklehead. The engine was easier to maintain and optimized. The “E” model had 989 cc of working volume, and the “F” model – 1207cc. Overall the Panhead was a taller motor and that necessitated a change in the Harley-Davidson frame design. The frame was named a “fork”, because of the shape of the bend.

The frame was welded from pipes. They remained the old springer-fork during the first year, but in 1949 a hydraulic, telescopic fork appeared.
