Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) led the opening practice session for the French Grand Prix at Le Mans on his final lap after victory over Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team). Marquez tried a new fairing, spending much time concentrating on aerodynamics during testing at Jerez and Mugello. It helped him to post a time 0.025s faster than Ducati rider (1'32.501).
Maverick Viñales (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) completed the top three. Vinales looked strong enough to top a race weekend session, for the first time since last year race at Aragon. Yamaha rider finished FP1 with a 1'32.543.
Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda Castrol) took the fourth position with 0.258s off the pace of the leader. French hero Johann Zarco (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) with his 1'32.755 finished in fifth, ahead of Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP). Suzuki rider Andrea Iannone was seventh, before Jorge Lorenzo (Ducati) and the two KTMs of Bradley Smith and Pol Espargaro, which completed the top 10. The Spaniard finished the race with a 1'33.245, 0.769 off the pace of stablemate Marquez.
